Gaetano “Guy” Anelli was born in Pescara, Italy on June 18, 1936. Guy’s refereeing career began in 1967 and continued for many decades. He achieved National status as a referee from 1974 to the mid 1980’s. He refereed in the National Soccer League for many years and was an assistant referee in the NASL from 1974 to 1982. His appointments included New York, Rochester, Chicago, Tampa Bay and Toronto.
Guy worked tirelessly in Hamilton refereeing thousands of games, including most of the top local teams. Guy always strived to improve the level of refereeing in our community by constantly recruiting and assessing local refs. In 1977 he was an instructor for beginner referees and was a winter clinic instructor in 1978. In the 1980’s Guy became an OSA accredited Assessor and continue until his health no longer allowed him to. In 1978 he was the President of the Hamilton Referees Association and was later awarded a Life Member. He was also a longtime member of the OSRA.
Highlights of his refereeing career included the following appointments. 1980 CSA final U16 in Saskatoon, 1980 Canadian National team game, 1981 Ontario Cup men’s semi-finals. 1982 Canadian Championships U14 and U18 and the Italian National Military team against the Hamilton All-Stars.
Although Guy focused on refereeing most of his career, he was President of the Hamilton &District Soccer Association in 1986 and President of the Southern Ontario Soccer League in 1981. He also coached youth soccer from 1971-1986. All his contributions led to being a Life Member of the Hamilton & District Soccer Association.
Guy passed away in 2012 but his commitment to the game of soccer will always be remembered.
