Born in the Potteries in England in 1942, Don grew up on the family farm. Chores were first and foremost around the farm, but at age 10 Don developed a passion for the game of soccer. First at school, then college, and then served his apprenticeship with Michelin. Don was initially a goalie and then moved to midfielder. He progressed to representing his County, frequently having to do the farm chores first. He walked 4 miles to meet his team, travel, play a game, and then got back home to do the late chores.

Don and his family immigrated to Canada in 1969, settling in the Binbrook area. A slight 2 year detour to the USA convinced all of the family that Canada was home.

In 1980 Don was involved in the start up of The Binbrook Optimist Youth Soccer Club, with a total of 184 players. So began his second passion, youth soccer, becoming President just after one year.

As the Club grew, the need for a permanent centre also grew, and in 1984 Don was instrumental in convincing the local Council that this passing fancy of a sport was here to stay. Three soccer fields were installed at the new Glanbrook Sports Complex. Don is proud of the thousands of  hours he and other volunteers have committed to the Club to ensure that the facilities can now boast  a Clubhouse, floodlit field ,and playing surfaces, that will be home to 1100 soccer players in 2017.

Don served two terms as a Director of the Hamilton & District Soccer Association, as well as serving on various other Committees, including being the Chair of the Fees & Facilities Committee that successfully negotiated the User fee structure with the City of Hamilton.

Coaching remained important to Don, which he continued to do until 2012. Although he coached many Competitive teams and travelled to such places as Minnesota and Washington, his main focus remained at the recreational level, with the firm belief that every child has the right to play , enjoy, and feel a part of the game regardless of their abilities, in a  fun and learning environment.

Don continues to be actively involved with the Club.
