The Saltfleet Go Ahead Soccer Club was formed in 1965 and completed in the Hamilton District Soccer League. The team of distinction is the 1976 Major Bantam Team that went the entire season losing but just one game. It was an impressive run for the group of 15 and 16 year olds.
The 1976 team won every tournament that they entered, took the League Championship, League Cup, Ontario Cup, Eastern Canadian Cup, the Canadian Cup and the inaugural North American Championship Cup.
The team was led by coach, Fred Pretto a former professional player and Nino Favarro who also played at a high level. This team performed at a caliber never seen before. Members of the team were from East Hamilton, Mount Hamilton, Dundas and Saltfleet.
The team consisted of the following players Ernie Cicchi, Peter Appelman, John Bijman, Dennis McEniry, Andrew Dalton, Terry Giangregorio (captain), Kirk Gomez, Marty Tosello, John Carlin, Lou Nagy, Gord Noble, John Giftopoulus, John Tallach, Steve Jacobs, Gunther Schneider, and Alex Hajdu.
The players of this 1976 team will be remembered as they paved the way for the competitive program to thrive and brought the journey to the current programs still in place. The success of this team will go down in Hamilton soccer history.
